TMG Consulting Facilitates DBE Workshop in Baton Rouge

651f58fe-9f07-40d6-8315-9a1c9a60a220The 12th Annual Business Opportunities Workshop was held at the L’auberge Casino & Hotel in Baton Rouge on October 31st, 2017. This annual event series was first started by TMG as a tool to allow small and disadvantaged businesses to interact and create business relationships with Airport staff, prime firms, agencies providing small business assistance, and other small firms. This free workshop is sponsored by the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport and is geared toward those interested in pursuing future work with the Airport and other businesses in the surrounding area.

The workshop brought together over 100 attendees from a variety of backgrounds including small business owners, government officials, and resource groups. Along with sitting in on informational presentations, attendees were given the opportunity to network with other businesses while enjoying a complimentary breakfast and lunch catered by the casino. This event is one of many outreach efforts encouraging small and disadvantaged business development in Baton Rouge. The Airport was selected by the Airports Council International (North America) as the Small Hub Inclusion Champion for 2017, recognizing their dedication to promote diversity in the airport industry both through business development and community engagement.

Joe Levraea, Program Manager for BTR of AMG Consulting, gave an overview of upcoming projects and contract opportunities available at the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport.

Remy Graves, DBE/SBE Program Manager for the Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development, discussed what it takes to become DBE certified and the resources that the LADOTD can provide for business owners looking to get certified. Jo Ann Lawrence, Deputy District Director for the U.S. Small Business Administration closed out the workshop with her presentation, “Support for Small Business in Louisiana,” in which she identified numerous bond assistance, insurance, and general business advice programs which the SBA provides in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and throughout the state of Louisiana.

TMG Tips for a Safe and Smooth Carnival

Mardi-Gras

Visitors and residents alike have already begun flooding the streets of New Orleans for this year’s Carnival season. While we continue to enjoy this annual citywide celebration, this Mardi Gras season presents a unique set of challenges for the city officials who work to plan and protect the events.  Aside from the usual Mardi Gras concerns surrounding transportation and public safety, the 2015 season presents a new issue: ongoing construction along some of the major parade routes.

Intensive drainage projects are currently underway Uptown, which means that major tracts of prime parade-watching neutral ground real estate will be closed off on Napoleon Avenue.  Parade-goers who are accustomed to these locations need to take the neutral ground closures into account and plan on watching the parades at an alternate location. When traveling to and from the parades, note that Louisiana Avenue traffic has been constricted to one lane in each direction from St. Charles Avenue to Claiborne Avenue.

Transportation and parking are always more difficult during Carnival season, and this year public officials are encouraging residents to take public transportation whenever possible. New tools have been made available by the RTA to help individuals plan their routes and schedules with Mardi Gras events taken into account. An updated trip planner and mobile app can be found at www.norta.com.

Please note that buses and streetcars stop running two hours before parades begin and recommence after their routes have been cleared. Additionally, the city is offering an expanded schedule for the Algiers-Canal Street ferry. The increased service began Friday, February 6th and will run through Tuesday, February 17th. An additional ferry will be added to the schedule on February 14th and will remain in service until February17th.

A devastating fire engulfed the Shreveport Regional Arts Council’s (SRAC) headquarters on August 25, 2009, and propelled the vision for a new arts and cultural district in downtown Shreveport. Few would have thought the senseless act of arson would have spurred the revitalization of a once-great neighborhood. A historic, vacant downtown fire station was identified to serve as SRAC’s new headquarters for the artist community, newly named “Central ARTSTATION.”

SC 1After this renovation was completed, the next challenge was to revitalize the surrounding underused nine block area. The Shreveport Common Vision Plan was formed from a nine-month grass-roots, community-involved effort.

Led by SRAC and a team of architects and planners, an advisory board was assembled to include local area leaders, (downtown business partners, the city, and parish) neighbors, developers, artists, bankers and those in the investment community. Door-to-door listening sessions were held with neighbors and property owners; the artist community was surveyed; and numerous community-wide events were held where input was obtained from artists, area residents, and those living across the greater Shreveport area. TMG Wins State Planning Award!

On January 22, 2015, TMG Consulting and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) of Shreveport, Louisiana were awarded the American Planning Association – Louisiana Chapter 2015 State Planning Award of Excellence for a Process. The award was given for TMG’s market assessment of the Shreveport Common Arts and Cultural District.

The study was spearheaded and funded by the DDA and the Downtown Shreveport Development Corporation (DSDC). TMG Consulting analyzed the market potential for retail, commercial, and residential development (both market rate and artist housing).  Projections of the potential utilization, necessary units and square footage, occupancy rates, and rental revenues for the retail/commercial and residential developments were detailed in the study document. The team’s report has been instrumental in discussions with potential developers, investors, and the banking community about opportunities in Shreveport Common.

“It was remarkable to see all the data put into an analysis that gave easily understandable meaning to the opportunities available in Shreveport Common. We’re glad to have had the partnership of TMG Consulting in this project,” says Liz Swaine, Executive Director of the DDA/DSDC.

This award-winning project was led by Suzanne Leckert, Director of Feasibility & Land Use, with significant contributions from TMG’s Eric Melancon, Nilsa Duran, Tiffany Pitre, and Rachael Bauer.  At the 2015 Louisiana APA Conference held in Baton Rouge, Suzanne and Eric presented the study to a packed house of planners, government officials, and local leaders.

TMG Increases Engagement for DBEs and SBEs at Airport Event

On July 30th, 2014, TMG Consulting organized the 9th Annual Business Opportunities Workshop for the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport. This year featured a small business trade show, where small and disadvantaged businesses, along with resources agencies, tabled to showcase their talents. Attendance at this event topped over 120 small and disadvantaged business, prime contractors, resource agencies, and airport staff! The purpose of the Business Opportunities Workshop is multi-faceted:

  • to educate firms about the Airport’s Disadvantaged Enterprise (DBE) program and Small Business Enterprise (SBE) program;
  • to inform attendees about upcoming work opportunities at the Airport;
  • to facilitate networking among prime and potential subcontractor firms in order to create connections now, learn what businesses have to offer and prepare a qualified team when the next Baton Rouge Airport bid is released.
  • and to provide resources to help small businesses grow.

Small businesses are an integral aspect of the Baton Rouge Airport’s long-term vision and the airport has a history of actively engaging the DBE and small business communities on Airport contracts. The Airport DBE Program is mandated by the federal government under FAA grant assurances and aims to ensure that government grant funds are distributed equitably.

TMG Consulting has assisted the Baton Rouge Airport to draft and administer both DBE and SBE programs and regularly sets DBE project goals, conducts compliance reviews of bid, and monitors ongoing DBE participation on projects. Events such as these are hosted to help communicate the wide range of opportunities at an Airport for businesses and to demystify the DBE program for all contractors.

March of Dimes Honors TMG Associate Eric Melancon

Each year, the New Orleans chapter of the March of Dimes honors between 20 and 30 young professionals and civic activists in the Greater New Orleans Area. Eric Melancon, an Associate at TMG Consulting, was among this year’s honorees.

This Spotlight on Success Gala is an annual fundraising event, silent auction, and awareness campaign for the March of Dimes whose mission is to reduce the rate of premature births, birth defects, and other significant health issues faced by newborn babies.

Honorees and the Local Chapter’s March of Dimes Board Members work together to solicit sponsorships and auction item donations from businesses and organizations in the local area. TMG Consulting was among the many proud sponsors of this year’s event.

This year’s Gala, held on June 13, 2014, raised a record-breaking $170,000 for the March of Dimes, and hosted over 1,000 attendees, the most the annual event has ever brought in. Impact of Sequester: Economic Impact Estimates will Become Less Reliable and More Expensive to Produce

The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) is planning to make significant program cuts as a result of the Budget Control Act of 2011 and the Sequester of funding. One such program that is in danger of being cut is the Regional Input-Output Modeling System (referred to as RIMS II).

RIMS II has served as a critical tool used for economic analysis for decades. It is used to describe how changes in economic activity (spending) impact jobs, earnings and additional spending in a specific region. It is the basis for projecting changes in jobs, earnings, and tax revenues, resulting from projects such as major hotel and casino developments, airport construction efforts, chemical plants expansions, as well as the jobs and spending created by major events such as the Super Bowl or the Final Four NCAA National Basketball Championship.

Since the 1970s, BEA has collected and processed economic data in order to generate RIMS II and offer it to the public on a cost-recovery basis. RIMS II is a commonly used tool by universities, public agencies, and private business alike.

The BEA has announced that effective immediately, the RIMS product will no longer be updated. Furthermore, effective September 30, 2013, all current versions and historical RIMS products will no longer be available for purchase.

On June 19th, the BEA released the following statement about the production RIMS II:

“BEA will eliminate its RIMS II product, which currently generates products on demand as events warrant. The RIMS II program will continue to accept and process orders, which are fulfilled on a cost-recovery basis, through the end of the fiscal year. BEA will not build and develop the data needed to update the data set and fulfill orders in future years.”

The BEA intends to discontinue RIMS II by September 30 of this year and estimates that cutting the program will save $1.4 million. This represents only 0.00016% of the Department of Commerce’s total budget of $9 billion in FY13, yet it will gravely impact the ability of  public agencies and private businesses to demonstrate how projects and initiatives can benefit the general public.

RIMS II will not be easily replaced by a private sector solution, since most of these alternatives have historically relied upon the BEA and RIMS II in their own development. Without the collection and reporting of the data from BEA, these private sector alternatives will no longer be based on the independent and verifiable information. These potential private sector alternatives are also substantially more expensive than RIMS II, which was produced on a cost-recovery basis by the federal government.

TMG Consulting has reached out to our federally elected leadership and have urged them to support any efforts that would allow the reinstatement of the RIMS II program within the BEA budget. TMG would also ask that any other parties that rely upon the RIMS II program do the same.

TMG Hosts Career Day with Middle-School Scholars

TMG Consulting recently hosted a team of 8th-grade students from our Mid-City neighbor John Dibert Community School.  Like many of us at their age, the students did not have a clear idea of what they wanted to do when they grow up. Some expressed interest in becoming athletes, musicians, or theatrical performers, seemingly influenced by what they see in the media.

We spent the morning exploring how the fields of engineering and urban planning were woven into the fabric of their daily life activities – from electrical engineers designing cellular phone communication towers to urban planners creating new streetcar routes.

With basic tools like a map of New Orleans, colored pencils, and markers, the students programmed their own streetcar routes based on their own points of interests.

One student living on the West Bank proposed creating a streetcar route from his house to school in Mid-City.  The proposed concept required a new trans-Mississippi bridge and significant track infrastructure.  This allowed for a discussion of planning priorities and the challenge of deploying needed services when faced with limited resources, like funding. The team considered how this new route would significantly benefit the larger community.

The students then collectively created a streetcar route to service 30 miles – approximately $600 million of investment in the New Orleans built environment. This then pushed our young urban planners to leverage existing routes to make the most of their allocated miles. They presented their proposed routes to their “client,” our own Mr. Chapman, with flying colors!

TMG enjoyed sharing our passion for engineering and urban planning with these students to create a more vibrant city. We had great fun working with these young scholars and shaping the career aspirations of the next generation.

Loyola University Hosts Discussion on International Business

On April 10th, Loyola University’s Joseph A. Butt, S.J. College of Business presented a panel discussion on business practices and relationships between Germany and the United States (http://www.loyno.edu/news/laag/20130328/4382).  As a German who is now a permanent resident of the U.S., I was honored to be a part of this interesting and informative discussion.  I was joined on the panel by: W. Paul Andersson, Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Louisiana; Jeffrey A. Krug, PhD, Professor of Strategy and Chair of International Business at Loyola; and Jacquelyn A. Gross, President of the Global Business Association at Loyola.  In attendance were over 80 undergraduate students and their guests.

The evening discussion, organized by Loyola undergraduate students, focused on the necessity for young persons to spend time studying and working outside of the United States.  Differences in work culture and societal nuances were of particular interest to the audience, as many had previous experiences abroad, and many more were preparing for such.  As panelists, we all agreed that maintaining an open mind to cultural differences will be essential in today’s global economy.  Of concern to all were the legal issues and difficulties in obtaining necessary visas for international study and employment.  I, for one, am hopeful that the United States and the European Union will be able to form a trade zone in the future.  The establishment of a trade zone will hopefully open up the doors for more communication, collaboration, and interaction between the country of my birth and the country I now call home.

I was truly impressed with the students and faculty of Loyola University, and I am confident that they will be forging new territory in international business, hopefully with my native Germany.
